Truly stunning late 19th Century Verre Eglomisé reverse painted glass

sign for the renowned Yorkshire butchery business of George Ellis (Deusbury), purveyors of fine Fish, Game and Poultry.

Reverse-painted glass signs are created by painting the design on the back of the glass so it appears correctly when viewed from the front. 


It's long, 407 cm in fact of rectangular form within its original ebonised black frame and featuring the business name and offerings in silver lettering against a darker background. 

The sign uses reverse painting on glass, a technique dating back centuries, where the artist paints the image in reverse order on the back of the glass. 

This type of sign was commonly used for shops and businesses in the past, serving as an advertisement for the goods or services offered. 

As a totally unique piece of vintage advertising, it will hold value for collectors, especially those interested in signage or local history
